GOLEM The Jewish inhabitants of an Eastern European Ghetto face persecution. Their Rabbi plots salvation by conjuring up a spell to bring a human shaped clay figure to life as the mythical "Golem". This was the third time Paul Wegener filmed the ancient Jewish myth which is also one of the world's first robot stories. Of worthy note are the decidedly expressionistic sets, chiaroscuro photography and gothic lighting that Wegener employed for the first time. Directed by Paul Wegener, Carl Boese. Script by Wegener and Henrik Galeen. Photo by Karl Freund, Guido Seeber. With Wegener, Albert Steinruck, Ernst Deutsch, Lyda Salmonova. GERMANY 1920 Complete
115 minute edition. Silent film with added, copyrighted music score for

STUDENT
OF PRAGUE A poor student sells his soul to a mysterious stranger to obtain money to woo a girl he has become infatuated with. He quickly learns that a man can't exist without a soul and he descends into madness and murder. This first filming of the classic legend was also one of the first German films to present dark supernatural subject matter and haunting visuals; a precursor to the German Expressionist Movement. Reportedly, Paul Wegener first heard of the legend of the Golem--another soulless being--while filming Student of Prague and later filmed that story three times. Directed by Stelian Rye. Script; Hanns Heinz Ewers. Photo; Guido Seeber. Cast; Paul Wegener, John Gottowt, Grete Berger, Lyda Salmonova, Lothar Korner. From Bioskop. Germany 1913 56 minutes.
