THE LAW Two prospectors in a remote and desolate part of Alaska are murdered. Their companions seek instant retribution from the suspect but they are convinced to apply justice—by the law. “This strangely hypnotic work is divided into five 'acts', moving through a range of moods to the tense and bitter climax. At the centre is the riveting, stylized performance from Kuleshov's wife, Alexandra Khokhlova.”—Holt’s foreign Film Guide Directed by Lev Kuleshov. Script by Kuleshov and Victor Shklovsky from Jack London's story The Unexpected. Photo; Konstantin Kuznetsovv. Cast; Sergei Komarov, Alexandra Khokhlova, Vladimir Fogel, Pyotr Galadzhev, Porfiri Podobed. USSR 1926, 62m Silent
film with added music score. |

BED & SOFA Tretia Mecht Chanskaya A married couple living in a small flat offer lodging to an old friend. When he cannot find another place to live, he moves in with them. Sexual tension follows and, when the husband is away on business, the wife and friend initiate an affair. The husband, after overcoming his initial shock and anger learns to accept his situation and the three settle down to a menage-a-trois! An unusually frank film for the period, the film was, not surprisingly, banned almost everywhere and was not rediscovered until the 1970’s. “Room's film has come to be regarded as a little masterpiece of the silent cinema. Aside from the extraordinary fluidity of his camera in a confined set and the splendidly natural performances of his cast, he deals with his subject in an almost casual, matter-of-fact way.”—Holt’s Foreign Film Guide Directed by Abram Room. Script; Victor Shklovsky. Photo; Gregori Giber. Cast; Nikolai Batalov, Ludmila Semenova, Vladimir Fogel. USSR 1927 115mins.
