REBEL FLIGHT TO CUBA

This late 50's flick was a precursor to the 70's 'Airport' films. The airplane in trouble this time is loaded with some noteworthy passengers including a priest, a minister, a rabbi, an, unhappy rich countess, a couple who keep marrying and divorcing, an unhappy musician, a fuguitive Nazi and a pregnant mother --- just to name a few. Some of the subplots include a love triangle involving the stewardess, the pilot and copilot, a stolen planeload of Nazi gold and a hijacking scheme.

Most interesting is the archtypical no-name, super-cool, rogue-hero who, in 90 chain smoking minutes, saves a nation from disease, helps deliver a baby (he also baptizes him and arranges for the adoption), foils a hijacking, encourages peace between Christians and Jews, thwarts the Nazis, crash lands a plane and finally disappears into the shadows. Serious soap and some hot action add up to an absolute 'Airport' double (sans color, Charlton Heston and the nun with the guitar) and make this a must--see flick for fans of the genre.

Directed by Gottfried Reinhardt. With Linda Christian, Sonja Ziemann, Ow Fisher and peter Van Eyck.

Germany, 1959. 90m Dubbed in English.

THE WILD RIDE

Jack Nicholson stars in this low budget bike melodrama; one of his earliest films. He plays a young, punk hot rodder who blazes through the roadway and straight into trouble. Although the film is predictable standard fare, it offers a precious look at a young and talented Jack Nicholson.

THE WILD LITTLE BUNCH

In a London slum a single mother struggles to raise 11 children. Beset by pains, she makes the eldest boy (played by Jack Wild) promise to take care of his siblings should anything happen to her. After her death, he attempts to keep his family together in spite of many obstacles. When the boys are finally taken away and placed in an orphanage, middle-of-the-night escapes follow . They are reunited and in a condemned building, they set up their new home, When the youngest boy becomes ill, his brothers must reconsider their positions in order to help him. Some will compromise, accept what society thinks is 'in their best interests', and turn themselves into the authorities. Others will continue to fight the system; they'll go on the run and try to elude the police who are on a city wide hunt. Based on a true story, the boy's plight brought about changes in Britain's child welfare system.

Directed by David Hemmings (Blow up), Starring Jack Wild (Oliver, Melody). Britain, 1972. 95 minutes, Color.
