THE GOLDEN COACH
La Carrozza D'Oro \ Le Carrosse D'Or

Anna Magnani, as Camilla, the leading lady of a touring Commedia Dell'Arte theatrical troupe, provokes the amorous attention of three men; a bullfighter (Rioli), a soldier (Campbell) and the Viceroy (Lament). Each man sees in Camilla their perfect mate---but for completely different reasons---while neither can see Camilla as she sees herself. Romantic jealousies, a colorful recreation of the commedia dell'arte, and an insightful view of the interrelationship between art and life and round out this nearly perfect Renoir film.

“…a rich illustration of the theme of the tension between life and theater”—Holt’s Foreign Film Guide

THE RULES OF THE GAME
La Regle Du Jeu

A mixed group of upper-class types assemble at the chateau of a wealthy man and conduct romantic and social intrigues that eventually lead to tragedy. With its mixture of comedy, tragedy, melodrama, farce and realism, this satire on upper-class French decadence is often considered Renoir's masterpiece.

What Renoir described as the "exact depiction of the bourgeois of our time" was not appreciated by audiences of the day. The more bitter criticisms were excised from the film to create an 85 minute “comedy” which was also rejected. As WWII began, the film was banned altogether as being “too demoralizing”. It was only in 1956, when re-released in its original length, that the film was acclaimed one of the great masterpieces of the world cinema.

THE SOUTHERNER

Poetic drama of a poor southern farmer's struggle to raise his crops and support his family. Despite a never-ending succession of natural and manmade problems, he goes on...like nature. Probably the best of the films French director Jean Renoir made in America, with a unique near documentary-like style typical of Renoir. Renoir produced the film independently with Burgess Meredith, among others.
