GOSPEL
ACCORDING TO ST MATTHEW An epic filming of the story of Jesus' life. Unlike previous vulgar Hollywood filmings that employed spectacular sets, glamorous stars and overacting, Pasolini presented a simple, honest and earthly vision of Christ's life using unmade and unknown actors against plain dramatic landscapes. The film's realism is underscored by Pasolini's brilliant use of a Cinema--Verite photographic technique complete with ragged, hand held shots and bleak natural lighting. Special Jury Prize Venice 1964 "The film's most impressive aspect is it's relentlessly literal portrayal of the familiar text. Every viewer has his own well formed ideas of how Christ looked and how he acted. Yet the film constantly makes the viewer feel that what he sees is the way it must have been. Image after Image is so natural but so striking that it is as Matthew (and the viewer) were seeing it all for the first time"--Catholic Film News "Certainly the best life of Jesus ever placed on film and probably the finest religious film ever made as well"--- Life Magazine Script and direction by Pier Paolo Pasolini. Photo by Tonino Delli Colli. Music; Bach, Mozart, Prokofiev, Weber, Negro Spirituals. Cast; Enrique Irazoqui , Margherita Caruso, Susanna Pasolini, Marcello Morante, Mario Socrate. Italy 1964 142 minutes.

TEOREMA Terrance Stamp is a beautiful young man who moves into the home of a rich Milan family and begins affairs with every member of the family--the father, the mother , the daughter, the son and the maid . Initially, each of his lovers appear to be liberated by his love. But in reality, they have all been enslaved. When he suddenly deserts them, each declines into the darkness of despair and psychosis. The breathless, hand held camerawork is reminiscent of The Gospel (l964) but the film's anti-narrative foreshadows Salo (1976). Controversial, complex and erotic psychosexual thriller. On it’s initial release Teorema was banned and Pasolini charged with obscenity by the Italian government. He was subsequently acquitted. Best Actress (Betti) Venice 1968 Directed by Pier Paolo Pasclini. Script; Pier Paolo Pasolini. Photo; Giuseppe Ruzzolini. Music; Ennio Morricone. Cast; Terence Stamp, Silvana Mangano, Massimo Girotti, Anne Wiaremsky, Laura Betti, Andres Jose Cruz. ITALY: 1968, 100m
