An elderly widower wishes to marry off his only daughter. She prefers to remain single and live an unconventional life as a career woman — most untraditional in 1940's Japan. This was the beginning of what is generally regarded as Ozu's classic period in which only the most ordinary things happen to ordinary people in extraordinarily moving ways.
