M A psychopathic child murder is hunted by both the police and the underworld. Cornered in an old factory, he is captured and brought to triâl before a "people's trìbunal" comprised of criminals! A brilliant film that raises questions of crime and punishment that are still being debated. One of the finest films of the early German sound period and a showcase of the techniques used by some silent film directors to make a successful transition to sound. Lang makes some creative uses of the new sound medium to enhance the subtle irony and darkness. From the dark Caligari--like streets to anguished faces of the parents of the vìctims, Lang captures every detail, constructing a near-perfect film. This is the longer, 99 minute re-release version with complete subtitles and the original anti capital punishment ending. “Fritz Lang's first sound film is a masterpiece of low-keyed expressionism, in which fear permeates every brick of the dark alleys and crumbling buildings which form its background. “—Holt’s Foreign Film Guide. Directed by Fritz Lang. Script; Thea Von Harbou, Paul Falkenberg, Adolf Jansen, Karl Vash. Photo; Fritz Arno Wagner. Music Karl Vollbrecht, Emil Hasler. Cast; Peter Lorre, Otto Wernicke, Gustav Gründgens, Theodore Loos, Ellen Widmann, George John. Germany 1931. 99 minute

METROPOLIS Lang's best known silent was this incredible blend of fantasy, science fiction and social criticism. In a futuristic super city, the elite "masters" of the city live a Felliniesque sweet life while the proletariat labors underground to maintain the machinery that keeps the city going. The plot thickens and takes off in a superb, overindulgent spectacle that involves a love affair between an elite city boy and a worker giri, a revolution, the sexiest female robot to ever hit the screen, and a recreation of the Tower of Babel! Lang was given an unprecedented budget to create the still impressive huge sets inspired by the New York City skyline. Eugen Schüfftan used a new special effects process to combine life-size action with miniature models to create stunning images of a mechanized monster city populated by flying machines. Highly recommended essential cinema. Directed by Fritz Lang. Script; Thea Von Harbou. Photo; Karl Freund, Günther Rittau. Cast; Brigitte Helm, Alfred Abel, Gustav Frölich, Rudolph Klein Rogge, Fritz Rasp. Germany 1926. 129 minutes. Silent film with added music score. ISBN 1-55881-184-2

THE
NIBELUNGEN, PART ONE: One of the most spectacular, expansive (and expensive) undertakings of the Silent German cinema was this extraordinary two part film adventure based on the classic saga. Siegfried, a Teutonic Knight, wins the hand of Princess Kriemhiid after years of wooing and spectacular feats of daring including a fantastic battle with a dragon. A long and brewing argument between Kreimhilde and a queen culminates jn Siegfried's murder and sets Kriemhild off on a path of revenge. “Lang's adaptation of the 13thcentury German saga is a superb example of the craftsmanship at the UFA studios. The stylized set designs by Otto Hunte, Erich Kettelhut and Karl Vollbrecht create a mysterious beauty, especially the misty forest (constructed in a Zeppelin hangar) and the romantic castles.” —Holt’s Foreign Film Guide Directed by Fritz Lang. Script; Fritz Lang, Thea Von Harbou. Photo; Carl Hoffman, Günther Rittau, Walter Ruttmann. Cast; Paul Richter, Margarete Schon, Hanna Ralph, Bernhard Goetzke, Theodore Loos, Hans Adalbert Von Schlettow, Rudolf Klein-Rogge. Germany, 1924. 131

WOMAN
IN THE MOON A scientist who believes the moon is made of gold organizes a rocket trip to the moon. Lang’s film is astonishingly prophetic; even the countdown from 10 to blastoff. The realism comes in part from Professor Hermann Oberth who served as one of the film’s technical advisors and later contributed to the Nazi’s V2 rocket program. Nevertheless, when the ship lands on the moon, the plot does get a bìt out of hand; not only is there gold on the moon but oxygen too! The gold, and the characters’ greed lead to treachery and deceit. Great science fiction from a master. Germany 1929 143 minutes. Directed by Fritz Lang. Script by Thea Von Harbou, Fritz Lang. Photo; Curt Courant, Oskar Fischinger, Otto Kanturek. Cast; Willy Fritsch, Klaus Pohl, Gustav Von Wangenheim, Gerda Maurus, Fritz Rasp. ISBN: 1-55881-185-0
