Along the way there's an attempt to kill Peppino and the head of the family fakes a heart attack to save the family honor! A ferociously funny little film. LOVE
IN THE CITY True episodes taken from newspaper reports were filmed in the locales where the events took place with some of the people involved in them. The most poignant episode finds a Sicilian girl seduced and abandoned in Rome. The bleakest from Antonioni features interviews with young girls who survived suicide attempts. The most exhilarating comes from Fellini who presents a reporter at a matrimonial agency claiming to be a doctor representing a werewolf who thinks that marriage might cure him! Directed by Dino Risi, Michelangelo Antonioni, Federico Fellini, Francesco Maselli, Cesare Zavattini, Alberto Lattuada. Script by Aldo Buzzi, Luigi Malerba, Luigi Chiarini, Tullio Pinelli, Vittorio Vettroni. Photo by Gianni Di Venanzo. Music by Mario Nascimbene. Featuring Antonio Cifariello, Livia Venturini, and nonprofessionals from the Centro Sperimentale Di Cinematografia, Rome. Italy

WOMEN
WITHOUT NAMES Following World War Two, expatriate women who had no passports or identification documents were herded into detention centers. Their lives consisted of sleepless nights, conflicts and thoughts of escape. Simone Simon is outstanding as a detainee who, at least superficially, appears to be a prissy bitch who hatches a plan to seduce a married camp worker, marry him and gain her freedom. Surprising and noteworthy is that although the film was made in the restrictive 50's, there are subplots dealing with sexuality, lesbianism, abortion, and women's rights. The film is also very anti-war. Because of these controversial topics, the film received limited distribution in the United States and remains obscure to fans and scholars of Italian Neorealism. Nevertheless, the film's frank, uncompromising realism makes it one of the movement's most thoughtful and thrilling dramas. Shot on location in an actual camp using real detainees as extras. Directed by Geza Radvanyi. Starring Simone Simon, Valentina Cortesa, Vivi Giol, Francoise Rosay. Italy, 1949. 94 min.
Italian, French and English dialog with subtitles. |
