EASY VIRTUE A British socialite, the wife of a boozing and abusive older man is discovered carrying on an affair with a painter. She ends up in court where a divorce is granted on the grounds of adultery and she is marked as a woman of easy virtue. She heads off to the shores of the Mediterranean where she meets a young Englishman who knows nothing of her past and falls in love with her. Their return to England is marked by tragedy as her past finally catches up with her. Even though the story is fairly routine -- another scandalous woman social drama -- the film serves as an exceptional vehicle for Hitchcock to try some creative cinematographic techniques, including one of the earliest camera dollies, and experiment with some shock plot devices that would be refined over the next half century of his career. Directed by Alfred Hitchcock. Screenplay by Eliot Stannard from the play by Noel Coward. With Isabel Jeans, Franklyn Dyall, Eric Bransby Williams, lan Hunter, Robin Irvine, Violet Farebrother. THE THIRTY-NINE STEPS Richard Hannay, an ordinary man — Hitchcock's perennial character — takes in a musical hall show featuring "Mr. Memory" who can memorize anything. Suddenly, the performance is interrupted by gunfire and, in the chaos, a woman asks Hannay to protect her from a legion of spies. Later, the woman shows up at his apartment —dead— and he is the prime suspect! He quickly sets out to find the murderer whom he suspects is a character missing part of one of his fingers. Hannay's journey is filled with spine tingling twists and turns; in one instance he tries to enlist the help of a fine upstanding citizen ---- until he notices a missing finger on the man! Elsewhere, he has a liaison with a sexy blonde who has been handcuffed to him. Although remade twice, this original version stands alone as the first great showcase for the numerous techniques Hitchcock developed prior to moving to Hollywood.. Directed by Alfred Hitchcock.
