THE BIRTH OF A NATION

An epic and biased filming of the civil war and the reconstruction as seen through the eyes of a southerner. Prior to the Birth of a Nation, films were usually one or two reel curiosities that people walked out on at the close of vaudeville shows. Film was anything but an art form or a vehicle for serious expression. The Birth of a Nation was the cinematic landmark that blew apart all conventions. Its feature length dismayed theatre owners who thought audiences would never sit still for such a long film. Nevertheless, the audiences stayed and they were awed; the grand spectacle, the brilliant storytelling techniques (intercutting battlefield shots of soldiers' with their families praying for their safe return) closeup shots, the iris, panning, scanning --these were the magical elements that established the language of cinema. The Birth of a Nation has been available in a number of versions running as little as 70 minutes. This 197 minute NYFA edition is the longest and most complete version known to exist. Included on this tape is a sound interview with Griffith filmed for the 1930's re-release.

Directed by DW Griffith. Screenplay by Griffith and Frank E Woods after the novel by Thomas F Dixon Jr. Photo by G.W. Bitzer. With Henry B Walthall, Mae Marsh, Miriam Cooper, Lilian Gish, Mary Alden, Donald Crisp.

INTOLERANCE

After the controversy about racism which followed the Birth of A Nation, Griffith dismissed his critics as "intolerant" and, as his answer to them, he made this epic on the issue of intolerance. Using the simple image of a mother rocking a cradle, he interweaves four different stories set in four different space/ time locals. Nothing seems to unify any of these stories except for the issue of intolerance perpetrated by people upon each other. Although not well received by mass audiences of the day, the film's editing and narrative techniques were immediately recognized as visionary and influenced the editing techniques of both Eisenstein and Pudovkin who expounded upon Griffith's style and developed the breathless montage techniques that became synonymous with the Russian cinema.
