RIFIFI
An aging ex-con, just released from prison, resolves to ‘go straight’ but becomes embittered after finding his girlfriend shacked up with a rival gangster. His ailing health and a fortune, hidden in a jewelry store vault, tempts him to pull off one last great crime. He organizes a safe cracker, a couple of other thugs and carefully plans every move and every gesture they will have to make during the burglary. The film ends in an orgy of torture, murder, kidnapping and retribution --- all of which is chillingly foretold in the film's introduction: "When the wicked are multiplied, crime shall be multiplied but the just shall see their downfall." Superb! One of the
greatest crime capers: it set the standard for all others that followed.
Most memorable are Dassin's original and unique touches, including the
exquisite silent burglary sequence which runs nearly half an hour! Rififi was originally distributed to theaters in a 117 minute version. Later, seven minutes of sex and violence were excised to create the 110 minute version shown by film societies and previously available on video from other distributors. THIS NYFA VIDEOTAPE IS THE COMPLETE 117 MINUTE UNCUT VERSION. A NYFA EXCLUSIVE! BOB
THE GAMBLER Bob the Gambler, an ex-bank robber 'prince of thieves' type, lives on the margins of Paris society. After discovering that a casino is expecting to take in 800 million franks, they take the biggest gamble of their lives. Bob The Gambler, along with “rififi helped redefine the classic gangster film and created what we now know as the modern gangster cinema. This film is also noteworthy for it’s gritty, freewheeling photographic style, replete with Jump cuts and location shooting—all of this a full four years before the official start of the “Nouvelle Vogue”. The cinematographer, Henri Decae would go on to photograph Paris for numerous Nouvelle Vogue outings by Godard,Resnais and other voguers. Directed by Jean-Pierre Melvill. Script by Melville.
