THE EPIC THAT NEVER WAS

In 1937 the flamboyant producer Alexander Korda acquired the film rights to Robert Graves' novel, I, Claudius. Korda proceeded to assemble a stellar cast, including Charles Laughton, Merle Oberon, Eileen Corbett and Robert Newton and, finally, he hired the legendary Josef von Sternberg to direct. The end result was to be another ‘instant classic’ in the Korda tradition. Unfortunately, the production ran into problems including artistic differences, personality clashes and a tragic accident. The doomed film was eventually closed down. This BBC documentary, narrated by Dirk Bogarde, blends interviews with the participants and some of the filmed footage to create an insightful look at the epic that never was
