FELLINI A DIRECTORS NOTEBOOK

This surreal pseudo-self-documentary purports to show the preparations leading up to the creation of Satyricon. Fellini begins with a visit to the half-built sets for his abandoned film, 'The Voyage of Mastorna', where some hippies are planning a wedding. He proceeds to consider 'Satyricon' and tries to get the feel of Ancient Rome by taking a subway that travels through ancient Rome (a 'professor of subways' follows along to clarify matters). There is also a visit to a slaughterhouse to study the blood thirst of the Ancient Romans. He finally attempts casting but is distracted by a parade of crazed, aspiring thespians. They include a monkey faced boy who does bird calls, a snake charmer and an overweight ex-opera singer with her two bodybuilding sons who flex for Fellini while a diminutive German language student inspects their muscles. The madness is rounded off with a seven foot giant, Julietta Massina introducing scenes cut out of 'The Nights of Cabiria' and rare footage of Marcello Mastroianni on a photo shoot and his screen test.

Directed by Federico Fellini. With Marina Boratto, Julietta Massina and Marcello Mastroianni.

LA DOLCE VITA
The Sweet Life

Marcello Mastroianni is a gossip columnist for a sleazy scandal sheet who derives satisfaction from the vulgar celebrities he writes about. Little does he realize that he is becoming one of them as he begins a decline into fame and fortune, living the "sweet life" and abandoning all meaningful values. This ‘search for himself’ places him in a Fellini landscape with some memorable moments (a vast statue of Christ is flown over Rome; Marcello and a bored heiress pick up a prostitute for a menage-a-trois; Nadia Gray hosts an orgy at which she performs an immortal striptease). Praised and damned worldwide-La Dolce Vita was an international cinematic sensation.

Directed by Federico Fellini. Script by F. Fellini, Ennio Flaiano, Tullio Pinelli, Brunello Rondi. Photo by Otello Martelli. Music by NinoRota. With Marcello Mastroianni, Anouk Aimee, Yvonne Furneaux, Magali Noel, Alain Cuny, Anita Ekberg, Nadia Gray, Valeria Ciangottini, Annibale Ninchi, Lex Barker.

THE NIGHTS OF CABIRIA
Le Notti Di Cabiria / Cabiria

The proverbial prostitute with a heart of gold is Cabiria; an earthy, independent woman who rejects the fast life offered by pimps, works on her own, saves some money and even owns a small home. Cabiria persues her elusive dream of a better life and marriage but ends up struggling with the pushers and players of Rome. In spite of all the disappointments and humiliations, Cabiria maintains her dignity and the hope of a better future. An interesting variation on the "sweet life" of Rome and one of Fellini's best early efforts. Arguably, this film catapulted him to international acclaim. Cabiria was made into the musical Sweet Charity by Bob Fosse, with Shirley MacLaine on film.
