SVENGALI John Barrymore gives one of his finest performances as the evil Svengali who wrecks terror on all who fall under his hypnotic control. His ultimate project is a young and beautiful woman, Trilby whom he transforms into a great zombie-like singer. The young man who loves her sets out to save her and get revenge. Of worthy note is Barrymore who, in make-up, with his long flowing hail, strange triangular shaped beard and flowing cape, makes an incredible Svengali. Also noteworthy is the film technique. Unlike many early talkies which sacrificed the visual elements for the magic of film sound, this film seemed to emphasize the visuals. One memorable sequence which tries to convey Svengali's hypnotic powers begins with a closeup of Svengali's eyes, pulls out of the room, through a window, into the streets, over rooftops and ends miles away, focused on the woman Svengali is attempting to hypnotize! Directed by Archie Mayo. Based on "Trilby" by George du Maurier. Cast; John Barrymore, Marian Marsh, Donald Crisp, Bramwell Fletcher.

INDISCREET Gloria Swanson jilts her boyfriend who then becomes enamored with her sister. Confrontations and deceit follow as Swanson tries to convince the man and his family that her entire family is crazy. Originally, Indiscreet was planned as a musical until director Leo McCarey (Duck Soup, The Awful Truth) took out all but two of the musical numbers, added some drama and turned the whole thing into a screwball comedy.
