JUDGE PRIEST Classic slice of Americana from the combined talents of Will Rogers and John Ford. Rogers is a folksy Southern Judge who steps down from the bench in order to defend a blacksmith who has assaulted the barber after the barber insulted the honor of a fair young maiden. Along the way to the startling courtroom finale --- which alternates from uproarious laughter to powerful drama --- Rogers finds time to go fishing with a chicken thief (Stepin' Fetchit), sing a spiritual with his black maid and visit the grave of his dead wife to keep her up-to-date about his life. "Native American humor at it's best"-NYT Directed by John Ford. Script; Irvin S. Cobb. Photo; George Schneiderman. Cast; Will Rogers, Henry B Walthall, Stepin' Fetchit, Hattie McDaniel, Anita Louise, Rochelle Hudson, Berton Churchill. Remade as The Sun Shines Bright (1953). USA: 1934. 84 minutes.

THE VILLAIN STILL PERSUED HER... An outrageous homage to the melodramas of days gone by. It begins innocently enough, with all of the trappings and cliches of action melodramas, except that everything is exaggerated to the point of total absurdity. The dastardly villain (dressed in black and sporting an evil mustache) stoops lower than low to evict the poor heroine (who is pure, virginal and plays a angel's harp). There's a good guy who succumbs to the temptations of demon rum and more. As if the silly story and hamish acting were not enough, at strategic points in the film--like right in the middle of a climactic love or chase scene--the action is interrupted by title cards like "Mrs. Jones, please come to the lobby, your carriage is leaking. Stars Buster Keaton, Hugh Herbert, Anita Louise, Joyce Compton, Richard Cromwell, Billy Gilbert and Margaret Hamilton. USA 1940 68 m ISBN
