NOTTE 24 Hours in the life of a writer and his wife. They visit a dying friend in the hospital, a nightclub and finally end up at an all night party where the guests suffer glory in their meaningless existence. Disgusted and bored, the wife leaves while the husband remains behind to seduce a woman he has become fascinated with. The celebration becomes more sordid and clumsy as the rich guests debate whether to indulge in an orgy but lack the imagination to do so. Daybreak reunites the couple and brings their reckoning. La Notte is the second installment of the trilogy (L’aventurra and L’eclisse which examines the alienation and stagnation felt in modern society. Directed by Michaelangelo Antonioni. THE
RED DESERT A bored, neurotic woman has an affair with her husband’s best friend. As the affair continues she becomes increasingly alienated from the soulless industrial environment around her and drifts into her own neurotic fantasy world. For his first color film Antonioni used and manipulated color to illustrate the characters internal moods. He painted not only the sets but entire buildings and even plants and trees. Deep reds and greens reflect the wife's neurosis, while brighter colors appear during her flights into fantasy. Best Film Venice Directed by Michelangelo Antonioni. L'AVVENTURA A group of wealthy friends visit a Sicilian island where a woman from their party disappears. Her lover and her girlfriend set out to find her and in their search they become emotionally and sexually involved with each other. L’Avventura is the the first part of Antonioni’s alienation trilogy. The film also presents, refined and polished, Antonioni’s unique film style (long tracking shots, limited dialogue) which redefined time and space in the cinema. Monica Vitti is absolutely ravishing in her first role for the director whose lover she would later become. Special Jury Prize Cannes Italy, 1960 145mins Directed by Michelangelo Antonioni. L'
ECLISSE A woman leaves her lover and begins an affair with a stockbroker, but finally opts for solitude rather than marriage or a failing relationship. The title refers to the wiping out of emotions between men and women in modern industrial society. The film ends with a haunting montage; 52 shots of a city bereft of living creatures. A fitting end to the alienation trilogy. The film centers on the beautiful Vitti, through whose eyes we see the buildings and landscape echoing her emptiness.
